Dr. Betru grew up in Ethiopia and made a promise to his grandmother that he would one day become a doctor and help her with her various ailments. He went abroad and become a doctor. He came back to Ethiopia when his grandmother suffered a stroke. Because of a lack of dialysis machines, she did not survive. He vowed to make changes in health care in Ethiopia - but before his mission could be accomplished, he was killed on 9/11 on board the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. His friends and colleagues have taken his unfinished goal and made it their own mission.
