The California State reptile has been on the endangered species list since 1989. The desert tortoise is still on the decline and will soon go extinct if measures are not taken. Environmentalists have tried to block off certain areas from traffic, and they advocate route designation across the desert areas. However they have found opposition from motorcyclists, who love the open land and complain about having a limited space to ride.
