Idalia, an immigrant from Guatemala, tells Impact how her family came to the U.S. to escape war and murder. A native speaker of Kanjobal, Idalia had to learn to write and speak English and Spanish. She is now an interpreter at a Los Angeles clinic, where she witnesses the homesickness of her fellow Guatemalans. But she knows that there would be nothing to return to.
